151. The Crowned Buddha statue or Jowo, Tibet’s most sacred statue. It is of Bengali origin and was brought to Lhasa from China in the seventh century by Princess Wen Cheng, the Chinese bride of King Songtsen Gampo. It is housed in the Jokhang, Lhasa’s principal temple. During the Cultural Revolution it was removed and abandoned in a warehouse. But, being of massive bronze, it was not destroyed and was later restored to its former place in the Jokhang. The crown of red-colored gold, set with corals and turquoise was destroyed, but this new one has been offered by the faithful in recent years. 1985
